The Daily News

The New York Daily News is an American tabloid newspaper published in New York City. It is known for its intense city news coverage, celebrity gossip, classified ads, and comics, as well as an opinion section. The newspaper was founded in 1919 by Joseph Medill Patterson. Its circulation has declined significantly over the past several decades, although it still is one of the top-selling newspapers in the United States.

The Daily News was the first large newspaper in the world to have a picture editor, and is credited with giving birth to the photojournalism profession. It was also a pioneer in color printing, and in the late 1920s and early 1930s the paper became famous for its outstanding international reporting. During this period, the paper was the only major newspaper that had its own radio station, which later became WPIX-AM and today is WFAN-FM.

In its heyday, the Daily News was a dominant force in local news and an important national newspaper, with a large circulation and a reputation for excellence. The paper was often the first to publish news of important events, and its editorials were frequently highly influential.

By the mid-20th century, however, competition from more sensational rival tabloids and declining circulation made it difficult for the Daily News to hold its own. Nevertheless, the newspaper remained a significant force in New York City and had a nationwide audience through its syndicated editions.

On the morning of November 8, 1928, a reporter named Harry A. Schiller strapped a camera to his leg and ran into the street outside the Daily News headquarters at 450 West 33rd Street in Manhattan. As he clicked the shutter, he snapped an unforgettable image of Ruth Snyder being executed in the electric chair for murder. The story made front pages across the country, and the picture has since been considered one of the most iconic images in the history of American journalism.

In addition to the print version of The Daily News, which is distributed Monday through Friday during the academic year, the newspaper also publishes a weekly online supplement called The Daily News Weekday and various special issues throughout the year in collaboration with Yale’s cultural centers and affiliated student groups. In addition, the Yale Daily News is financially and editorially independent of Tribune Publishing.
